Do you need a website if your business is already on Google Maps?

In most cases, yes. A Google Maps listing gets people to your phone number and opening hours. A website answers the questions a listing cannot, and gives Google more to rank you on.

What a Google Maps listing does well

A listing puts your business on the map, shows your hours and phone number and collects reviews. For someone nearby who wants to call or get directions, it is often enough. It is free and quick to set up, which is why it comes first.

What it cannot do

  • Explain your services in detail. A listing has a short description and a few photos.
  • Show your full range, prices you choose to share or how you work.
  • Rank for the many searches that are not about your name, such as a service plus your town.
  • Belong to you. Google can change how the listing looks and what it shows.

What a website adds

A website is yours. You decide what it says, how it looks and what customers do next. It gives Google pages to rank for the things you do, and gives people somewhere to land when they click from Maps, Instagram or an ad. It also lets you place a WhatsApp button where it matters.

Comparison graphic. Google Business Profile shows you on Google Maps and in local search, holds your phone number, hours, photos and reviews, is free to create and is laid out by Google. Your website explains your services in full, can rank for many more searches, is entirely under your control and is the home for your WhatsApp button. Best results come from using both and linking them.

How they work together

Link your website from your profile and your profile from your website. Use the same business name and phone number in both. Keep the profile up to date, and use the website for the depth. See local SEO and Google Business Profile and website design.

Quick answers

Is a Google Maps listing enough for a small business?

It is a good start, but it has limits. A website lets you explain services, rank for more searches and own your presence.

What should I set up first, a website or a Google Business Profile?

Start with the Google Business Profile because it is free and quick. Then build a website that backs it up with detail.
